SCENIC SANDWICH HARBOUR DUNE DRIVE
Probably one of the most exciting and memorable scenic 4×4 off-road tour you can go on. Our popular Scenic Sandwich Harbour Dune Drive tour starts in Swakopmund and onto Walvisbay, we share interesting facts along the way to the Ramsar wetlands of the Walvis Bay Lagoon and Pink Salt lakes of the enormous Saltworks. We pass some 54 bird species of various endemic and palearctic migratory birds numbering up to 3000 000 birds in our summer. Flamingos, Pelicans, Turnstone, Avocets, Sandpipers, Plovers and an array of Terns and Gulls are seen along the way.
The sandy route takes us to the most awesome dune views, where dune meets sea. Past dilapidated Houses of yesteryear scattered on the beach disturbed by raging springtides. Up the towering wind sculptured dunes, a heart stopping swooping roller coaster ride to the unexpected, lush wetland scenery of Sandwich Harbour at your feet. It is STUNNING! It’s Awesome! Our Sandwich Harbour 4X4 Self-drive tour affords you the opportunity to experience this unique tour driving your own vehicle. We guide and assist you along the route, communicating with 2-way radios, sharing dune driving skills in those difficult moments. You will gain plenty dune driving experience following our lead vehicle.
The tour starts in Swakopmund/ Walvis Bay, or at an arranged meeting point, normally the KENTUCKY Fried Chicken Parking lot in the centre of Swakopmund and onto Walvisbay, we share interesting facts along the way to the Ramsar wetlands of the Walvis Bay Lagoon and pink salt lakes of the Saltworks. We pass various endemic and palearctic migratory birds numbering up to 300 000 birds in our summer. Birds like Flamingos, Pelicans, Turnstone, Avocets, Sandpipers, Plovers and an array of Terns and Gulls are seen along the way. The sandy route south takes us past dilapidated Houses of yesteryear scattered on the beach disturbed by raging springtides, up the towering wind sculptured dunes, a heart stopping roller coaster swoop to the unexpected, lush wetland scenery of Sandwich Harbour, at your feet.

N.B. This half day tour is about 6 hours depending on how well we master the dune drive. The vehicle must be fuelled up, well insured and driven with the owner’s permission, if it is not your own vehicle. This self-drive tour is undertaken totally at your own Risk, and you indemnify the Guide and/or Desert Dunes and Dust Tours cc. of any damage that you might cause to your vehicle on the tour.

SKELETON COAST CAPE CROSS SEAL COLONY DRIVE
Shipwrecks Lichens and thousands of Cape Fur Seals
Today we leave north to Cape Cross Seal Colony, where Diego Cao planted a stone cross enroute in exploring a route to India in 1486. Along the way we stop at the Zeila Shipwreck, Lichen plains, Saltpans, and pass-through small settlements. The 50 000 strong Seal population awaits us. We hear them, we smell them, we can almost touch them. A small lunch is served along a remote desert site.

WELWITSCHIA, GOANIKONTES & MOONLANDSCAPE DRIVE
This half day tour takes you into the Namib Desert, a unique ecosystem of gravel plains and wind eroded river valleys. We study the tiny Lichens found along our way. Lichens are a joint- venture between Mushroom and Algae, dependant on fog for moisture, both needing each other to survive these harsh weather conditions.
We drive on for some breath-taking views of this 500-million-year-old area. The Moonlandscape. You feel you are on another Planet… Listen to the Silence! The road leads through Goanikontes an old watering station to our 360degree viewpoint of this vast and arid region. A lone Trac Trac Chad or Springbuck may be seen. A little further on we reach the Welwitschia Plains, a narrow band of desert stretch where this age-old plant grows. We view the 1500-year-old Welwitschia Mirabilis plants and learn how they survive. The rock formations create stunning landscapes of dolerite and granite, lava dykes and countless mining exploration sites. Our route is unique and interesting.
