Our Sandwich Harbour 4X4 Self-drive tour affords you the opportunity to experience this unique tour driving your own vehicle. We guide and assist you along the route, communicating with 2-way radios, sharing dune driving skills in those difficult moments. You will gain plenty dune driving experience following our lead vehicle.
The tour starts in Swakopmund/ Walvis Bay, or at an arranged meeting point, normally the KENTUCKY Fried Chicken Parking lot in the centre of Swakopmund and onto Walvisbay, we share interesting facts along the way to the Ramsar wetlands of the Walvis Bay Lagoon and pink salt lakes of the Saltworks. We pass various endemic and palearctic migratory birds numbering up to 300 000 birds in our summer. Birds like Flamingos, Pelicans, Turnstone, Avocets, Sandpipers, Plovers and an array of Terns and Gulls are seen along the way. The sandy route south takes us past dilapidated Houses of yesteryear scattered on the beach disturbed by raging springtides, up the towering wind sculptured dunes, a heart stopping roller coaster swoop to the unexpected, lush wetland scenery of Sandwich Harbour, at your feet.

We find a lone spot to absorb the tranquillity and vastness of the dunes and serve up a light tasty lunch with beverages. The quietness absorbs us, the vastness and beauty stun us. Its unique. Its Sandwich Harbour.
We share the very unknown history of Sandwich Harbour, strewn with Skeletons searching for Seals, Jackals, Springbuck, and what life the desert has to offer… The adrenaline packed dune drive follows over towering dunes and steep slip faces, past astounding dune views, salt pans and unexpected greenery, testing your driving skills to the utmost. These hummocks of Sedges and !Nara plants are home to mice, geckos, lizards and even Oryx.
Getting stuck is inevitable, it’s part of the fun and we are there to help you out. This will most certainly be a high lite on your Namibia tour, creating those special unforgettable memories.
N.B. This half day tour is about 6 hours depending on how well we master the dune drive. The vehicle must be fuelled up, well insured and driven with the owner’s permission, if it is not your own vehicle. This self-drive tour is undertaken totally at your own Risk, and you indemnify the Guide and/or Desert Dunes and Dust Tours cc. of any damage that you might cause to your vehicle on the tour.
